As part of its continuing efforts to identify which Republican legislators can rightly claim to be fiscal conservatives (which they are all, of course, claiming to be), the Michigan chapter of the RLC developed charts to rank legislators. Consistent with the RLC’s dedication to preserving social liberties, the index also scores legislators on votes affecting personal liberties.

Says Michigan RLC Chair Dan Sheill: “It’s no surprise, but the results are not especially encouraging — especially on the personal liberty rankings. However, these rankings show why libertarian-leaning folks are much more likely to find success through the GOP than the Democrat Party.”

According to my own interpretation of the results, it appears that Sen. Alan Sanborn (R-District 11) is the most socially tolerant and fiscally conservative member of the Senate. The most socially tolerant member is Sen. Mark Jansen (R-District 28), but he fails on fiscal policy. In the House, RLC-endorsed State Rep. Jack Hoogendyk (no longer serving) scored the best. Former State Rep. Brian Palmer had the second best combined score after Hoogendyk. On personal liberties, Rep. David Agema (R-District 74) scored fairly high, although he has a poor fiscal record.

Thanks to the Michigan RLC for keep Michigan voters informed!

(The votes on which the charts were based are available here.)

According to ISI, their survey results reveal that Americans are alarmingly uninformed about our Constitution, the basic functions of our government, the key texts of our national history, and economic principles.

• Less than half of Americans can name all three branches of the government.
• Only 21% know that the phrase “government of the people, by the people, for the people” comes from Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.
• Although Congress has voted twice in the last eight years to approve foreign wars, only 53% know that the power to declare war belongs to Congress. Almost 40% incorrectly believe it belongs to the president.
• Only 55% know that Congress shares authority over U.S. foreign policy with the president. • Only 27% know the Bill of Rights expressly prohibits establishing an official religion for the United States.
Almost half incorrectly believe it can be found in the Constitution.

According to the site, Govit.com is a non-partisan website that helps you interact with the government. Govit.com helps you vote on legislation, join conversations about particular bills, send your vote to your representatives, and compare your vote to their vote.

Taylor Norrish, the founder, wrote in his message to me, “Ron Paul has sponsored 65 active bills in Congress. Supporting this legislation would support Dr. Paul’s vision for America. You can view Dr Ron Paul’s Active legislation at the Govit.com site at http://www.govit.com/pages/Searchpage.aspx?filter=asy&GovMemberId=224&Search=.
