Peter Schiff (pictured) is a financial analyst who predicted the current recession long before it occurred. He was the Economic Adviser to Ron Paul’s 2008 Presidential campaign. Mr. Schiff is facing two primary opponents to become the Republican U.S. Senate nominee in Connecticut. The primary is on August 10. Donate to Peter at http://schiffforsenate.com/. Brian Miller is an Air Force veteran running for Congress in Arizona’s 8th District. He has three primary opponents and the winner will face Gabrielle Giffords, a vulnerable Democrat incumbent who rode the 2006 Dem. wave into office. Miller’s two primary opponents are attacking each other, so he may escape the victor in the August 24 primary. Donate to Brian at http://brianmillerforcongress.com/. Join Brian Miller on Facebook.

TerriMcCTerri McCormick is a teacher and former State Representative running for Congress in Wisconsin’s 8th District. News from Republican Liberty Caucus State Chapters

A brief overview of what’s taking place in our state chapters:

California: The state chapter has endorsed Proposition 19, which would legalize marijuana for personal use while leaving taxing of sales of marijuana up to local jurisdictions and the state legislature. Despite giving its support to the proposal, California RLC Board members highlighted their opposition to the idea of taxing marijuana, proclaiming that “It is important that voters and politicians alike remember that even after Prop. 19 passes, Article 13C of the California constitution grants voters the opportunity to block each and every new tax proposed by local governments.” Read the California RLC’s press release here.

Colorado: Although not a chartered affiliate of the RLC, new Colorado RLC Coordinator Bonnie Cannon helped the RLC National Committee select candidates and ballot initiatives to endorse in the state. A full listing can be found here.

Florida: At their July 25 meeting, the executive committee of the RLC of Florida made two official recommendations regarding Florida referenda that reiterate the group’s commitment to free markets, individual liberty and private property. The RLC officially recommended voters at large vote YES on Amendment 9 and NO on Amendment 4 in November. Amendment 9 is the Healthcare Freedom Act that will force health freedom to become a provision of the Florida Constitution. Unfortunately, a judge ruled that Amendment 9 will not be on the ballot this fall. Amendment 4, the so-called “Hometown Democracy Act,” would require public referenda on a wide range of land use decisions.

New Hampshire: The state chapter recently endorsed 61 candidates for office, most of them running for legislature. The New Hampshire lower house is the largest in the country, with 400 members. Democrats currently control both chambers of the legislature and governorship, so the RLC is hoping to propel its Forsytheslate of liberty-focused candidates through their primaries and to victory in November. Past New Hampshire RLC Chairman Jim Forsythe is a candidate of note because of his involvement in our organization and because he is running for one of the 24 State Senate seats in New Hampshire. Please support Jim and the other candidates!

Tennessee: The RLC chapter is working diligently to promote Van Irion, a Congressional candidate in District 3. Learn more about Mr. Irion at http://www.van4congress.org/.

Utah: Chairman Julian Babbitt reports that the next Utah RLC meeting will occur at 10am on Saturday morning, August 7th at the Murray Library. Utah RLC members and other interested parties will discuss campaign efforts, debate immigration, and the statewide Liberty Index which will grade state legislation.

Virginia: The state RLC has created a new Facebook fan page.

Wisconsin: The state chapter has been vocal in its opposition to pre-primary endorsements of both the U.S. Senate candidate and the Governor candidate by the Republican Party of Wisconsin. Both RLC-endorsed candidates for these offices were not selected by the Republican Party of Wisconsin. Voters will have the final say on September 14, but the Republican Party in the state is working to defeat two excellent liberty-minded candidates. We encourage you to call the state party and ask them why their process is rigged at (608) 257-4765.

Wyoming: Although the state chapter is not chartered, Coordinator Michael W. Dean has been actively networking with both Libertarians and Republicans in the state. The RLC National Board has endorsed two candidates for Governor, Ron Micheli and Rita Meyer. The primary is August 17.

Several states now have organized precinct projects to help elect freedom fighters to precinct positions from the ground up.

Here are links to state precinct projects.

The precinct project program is a natural alliance of the RLC because our state chapters are working to achieve this same goal.

ARTICLES AND EVENTS
Congressman: The Federal Government Has No Limits

Career politician Pete Stark of California attended a town hall in his district during July. One of his constituents asked about health care and where the government has the constitutional authority to pass the legislation they already passed. In a YouTube video, Stark claims “the federal government, yes, can do most anything in this country.”

The constituent then tries to explain to him the limits the Constitution places on the federal government.

Unfortunately, Representative Stark is not alone in his views. Let’s work to elect our RLC-endorsed candidates this fall.

Congressional Budget Office: Debt Unsunstainable According to the CBO’s forecast, federal debt held by the public will stand at 62 per cent of GDP at the end of fiscal year 2010. That’s the highest level since World War II – when the figure stood at about 80 per cent of GDP – and surpasses the level reached in the Great Depression. It’s certainly a jump from before the financial crisis. In 2007, just before the recession began, the proportion was 36 percent.

In a similar vein, Moody’s says the US has no clear plan to address its debt burden and that if this continues the ratings agency may be tempted to downgrade America’s credit rating. A downgrade for the guarantor, the back-stop, the safe haven, the very beating heart of the financial system would be a truly frightening prospect.

The CBO is going as far as to warn about the possible consequences of a lack of confidence in the US government’s ability to pay its debts. It says that to restore investors’ confidence, policymakers need to cut spending or boost taxes more drastically and painfully than if the adjustments had come sooner.

The Republican Liberty Caucus has warned about the problem of empowering government since our founding in 1991. Keep spreading the message of limited government. There are still many people we have to reach and many politicians we have to boot out.
