Well, it's not quite slavery--you can get a different job, you're just locked out of your chosen profession if you want to live in that state :). But there's another issue--think about it, if you work there, you are forced to pay dues to the union, and you know those are going to Democrat candidates. So who is going to want to do that? Well, that's no problem if you're a Democrat yourself. So what does that do to the balance of who goes into the profession? Maybe nothing. But maybe it skews the entire profession, that is with practically all the kids in the state for most of their waking hours. Sounds like a deliberately self-perpetuating problem to me.

Public employees do not need unions--every state should just make that illegal, period.

Sorry, Scott, but you can't have debate with the Democrat senators hiding in another state. Did the Republican Senators do that when the Democrats were in the majority?

And again, the bills which Pelosi and Reid rammed through Congress were bills which no one except them had access to or had read. That is not the case here. But the real truth of the matter is that the union contracts with out right to work are nothing more than slavery. No job if you don't join the union or pay them a fee which is used to fund a political party and program of which you don't approve.

Just one little correction - but makes a big difference monetarily... From the 2nd paragraph:

"...pension contributions will rise to 5.8% of each employee’s salary, health insurance premiums will rise to 12.6% of each employee’s salary,..."

The pension amount is correct, but the insurance cost will be 12.6% of the premium cost, not 12.6% of the employee's salary. That small point is one of the most mis-interpreted parts of the bill, with many saying they'll have an 18% "pay cut" because of the 5.8% + 12.6%... but those can't be added together because the percentages come from two different "sources".

While the 14 Democrats skipped town to block the vote of the surely to pass bill, it's not necessarily a bad thing. I do agree the Dem Senators were acting like cowards. We must remember, the bill was only unveiled 2 1/2 weeks ago. We should have debate and discussuion on this bill that the Republican's were trying to ram this through the state legislature. If I recall correctly, Republicans where heavily criticizing Pelosi and Reid for doing the same thing in 2009 as well as the state legislature under Governor Doyle's Democrat controlled state legislature.

While I mostly favor the Budget Repair Bill, some interesting facts about the bill have come out that have nothing to do with repairing the budget. For example, there is a provision to make single bid contracts madatory in certain projects, and Walker want's to sell steam powered electrical generorating plants that are dovetailed to the actual building. Let's not forget that our Governor is sometime's just as much a politican and a crook just as the other guy's with a "D" next to their name. Afterall, Walker was endorsed by Newt Gingrich, Jeb Bush and recived millions of dollars in campaign contributions from the Koch brothers. The Koch brothers own substancial oil and gas facilities in Wisconsin who are eager to keep their union in check.

I am sure other hidden parts of the bill will come to light very soon.
